Stellantis sets ambitious goals for electromobility
By 2030, Stellantis wants to reduce the CO2 emissions of its vehicles by 50%, and by 2038 the Stellantis fleet should be CO2 neutral on the road – at least as far as new vehicles sold are concerned. This requires a massive push towards electric mobility. By the end of the decade, Stellantis wants 100% of all vehicles sold in Europe to be exclusively battery-electric, and in the US as many as 50% of vehicles, Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares announced when presenting the plan.
That will probably require the designers to work overtime. By 2030, at least 75 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) will be on display (and available for purchase) in Stellantis showrooms. Of these, the company wants to bring at least 5 million units to customers worldwide. A specific product offensive for the US market is also planned, which will include 25 all-new BEVs. For example, the first all-electric Jeep is to be launched as early as 2023, followed by an electrically powered Ram pickup in early 2024.
This goes hand in hand with an ambitious expansion of the battery capacities installed in the vehicles. This is to increase by 140 gigawatt hours (GWh) to a total of 400 GWh in the same period.
Fuel cell research will also be continued and translated into products. The range by 2024 is to be expanded to include large delivery vans (previously: small trucks). In the USA, a similar vehicle is to be launched in 2025. This is accompanied by a cooperation with Waymo – the Google subsidiary develops autonomous driving vehicles. Together with Waymo, Tavares wants to establish sustainable delivery services.
