TSMC is in talks with the Singapore Economic Development Board about the possibility of building a wafer fab in the city state, according to theWall Street Journal.

The plan would be for a major foundry fab, costing billions of dollars, capable of running manufacturing processes from 28nm down to 7nm, according to reports.

TSMC is spending aggressively on building out manufacturing capacity with a budget of $40 billion for 2022 although it is unlikley developments would begin in Singapore this year.

Some of the reports added that TSMC was also down-playing the possibility of it opening up there saying that at present the feasibility of such a plan was being considered and no decisions made.

TSMC, the world’s leading foundry and most advance chip maker, has been in demand to bring its manufacturing footprint to most of regions of the world since the component supply shortage kicked in at the end of 2020. This is despite its long-standing policy of concentrating its manufacturing in Taiwan.

TSMC’s interest in Singapore follows moves to expand in Japan (seeTSMC-Sony Japan wafer fab plans progress) and increase its presence in the US with a $12 billion factory (seeReports: TSMC planning for six wafer fabs in Arizona).

The company has also been petitioned by the European Union and India (see
