Intel announces ‘Ponte Vecchio’ discrete GPU
However, the Intel 7nm process is not due to be manufactured until 2021.
Intel’s claim of the unveiling of a GPU architecture is overstated as the company has said almost nothing about the GPU except that it is called Ponte Vecchio and is planned to appear in 2021.
Intel describes the GPU as being general purpose and optimized for the acceleration of high performance computing and machine learning software. It also states that it is based on the X^e architecture, but does not describe the architecture or the internal structure of Ponte Vecchio.
The Ponte Vecchio will make use of Intel’s Foveros 3D and EMIB packaging, high-bandwidth memory, Compute Express Link interconnect and other intellectual property, the company said.
Intel has shown a slide saying X^e will have one architecture, one programming model but many micro-architectures. And that it can deliver teraflops and peta-ops of performance
But this is likely to be in multi-die or multi-chiplet configurations.
And that is about it.
