MediaTek has launched two chips for the next generation of WiFi that are the first to span access points and client devices.

The Filogic 880 and Filogic 380, shown at the Computex show in Taiwan this week, support the emerging WiFi 7 specification with wireless bandwidth up to 36Gbit/s. These will be among the first WiFi 7 devices to enter the market.

MediaTek has been involved in the development of the WiFi 7 standard since its inception, and the company is one of the first adopters of the technology. The rollout of WiFi 7 with a protocol for lower latency marks the first time that WiFi can be a true wireline/Ethernet replacement for high bandwidth applications from multi-player AR/VR applications and cloud gaming to 4K calls and 8K streaming.

The 6nm Filogic 880 combines a WiFi 7 access point with a quadcore host processor and network processor unit (NPU) for router and gateway designs in the operator, retail and enterprise markets. It has a scalable architecture that can support up to five bands with a 4×4 antenna to give a maximum speed of 36Gbps.

The chip has four ARM Cortex-A73 64bit application processors and a custom NPU to off-load both WiFi and Ethernet traffic. A built-in networking crypto engine (EIP-197) accelerates IPSec, SSL/TLS, DTLS (CAPWAP), SRTP and MACsec while the support for high-speed interfaces such as 5Gbit/s USB and 10Gbit/s PCI-Express, UART, SD, SPI, PWM, GPIO and OTP allows for platform customization.

The other chip, the Filogic 380 combo with both WiFi7 and Bluetooth5.3, is designed for client devices, including smartphone, tablet, TVs, notebooks, set-top boxes and OTT streaming devices. The 6nm chip’s dual concurrent 2×2 capability will be optimized “out-of-the-box” for these devices as MediaTek also supplies the corresponding platform devices as the largest supplier of chips for 5G smartphones. This helps to streamline the design process, maximize performance and accelerate time-to-market.
