Apple has suspended sales of products and payment services in Russia following sanctions imposed as a result of the war in Ukraine.

“We have paused all product sales in Russia,” said Tim Cook, CEO of Apple in an email to staff last night. “Last week, we stopped all exports into our sales channel in the country. Apple Pay and other services have been limited. RT News and Sputnik News are no longer available for download from the App Store outside Russia. And we have disabled both traffic and live incidents in Apple Maps in Ukraine as a safety and precautionary measure for Ukrainian citizens.”

“We will continue to evaluate the situation and are in communication with relevant governments on the actions we are taking,” he said.

Fedex has also updated its list of restricted items that it cannot ship to Russia, including circuit boards, mobile phones, computer components, batteries, electronic equipment, wireless, radio and communication equipment and even tapes and diskettes.

Intel and AMD are also reported to be restricting shipments of x86 processors to Russia, but only for military applications rather than consumer systems. The report by Russian media cites the Association of Russian Developers and Electronics Manufacturers (ARPE). The restrictions have been imposed by the US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), which also restricts the shipment of devices built using US equipment and design software. This is also reported to be preventing shipments of devices from Taiwanese foundry TSMC to Russia.
