MediaTek is demonstrating WiFi 7 (IEEE802.11be) to key customers and industry collaborators for the first time.

WiFi 7 supports speeds up to 40Gbit/s, 2.4 times that of WiFi 6 and 6E by using all the WiFi unlicensed frequency bands, 2.4GHz, 5GHz and 6GHz. The higher speed is achieved with the same number of antennas as WiFi 7 can use 320MHz channels and support 4K quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) technology.

The live demos shows how its Filogic chip can achieve the maximum speed defined by IEEE 802.11be and demonstrates its multi-link operation (MLO) technology. MLO technology aggregates multiple channels on different frequencies bands at the same time to highlight how network traffic can still flow seamlessly even if there is interference or congestion on the bands. multi-user resource unit (MRU) features for enhanced interference avoidances and mitigation.

Combining the FiLogic 830 and 630 WiFi 6/6E chips provides 7.8Gbit/s speeds across three bands (2×2 2.4GHz + 4×4 5GHz + 3×3 6GHz) as a baseline for the WiFi 7 capability.

The 12nm FiLogic 830 flagship chip uses a quad-core Arm Cortex-A53 CPU with integrated multi-band 4×4 WiFi 6/6E, twin 2.5GbE interfaces and hardware-based networking accelerators. The dual WiFi 6 baseband supports up to 1024QAM, 24 user OFDMA, BW160 and 8 spatial streams (SS), forming the basis of a WiFi 7 chip.

Products with WiFi 7 are expected to hit the market starting in 2023, which means the WiFi 7 silicon will be taping out in the first half of this year. WiFi 6E system are just emerging on the market.

“The rollout of WiFi 7 will mark the first time that Wi-Fi can be a true wireline/Ethernet replacement for super high-bandwidth applications,” said Alan Hsu, corporate vice president and general manager of the Intelligent Connectivity business at MediaTek. “MediaTek’s WiFi 7 technology will be the backbone of home, office and industrial networks and provide seamless connectivity for everything from multi-player AR/VR applications to cloud gaming and 4K calls to 8K streaming and beyond.”

“Faster broadband Internet access and more demanding applications such as higher resolution video streaming and VR gaming are driving demand for WiFi 6, WiFi 6E, and soon WiFi 7,” said Mario Morales, group vice president, Semiconductors at IDC. “WiFi 7’s advances in channel width, QAM, and new features such as multi-link operation (MLO) will make WiFi 7 very attractive for devices including flagship smartphones, PCs, consumer devices and vertical industries like retail and industrial; as service providers begin to deploy a wider spectrum of hotspots across these market segments.”
