European memory company formed
The European memory company is based on a management buy-out of memory distributor and memory module manufacturer Memphis Electronic GmbH led by Walden International, a venture capital firm that specializes in technology investments.
It is not clear whether Neumonda has access to the Qimonda intellectual property portfolio. Qimonda was a DRAM spin off from Infineon in 2006 that collapsed in 2009 although its patent portfolio continued to have value and was licensed to many DRAM makers.
But the two founders have a great deal of memory experience.
Professor Peter Poechmueller, the current Memphis CTO and former vice president of memory product development at Qimonda, is leading Neumonda as CEO. Marco Mezger, former COO of Memphis Electronic, becomes executive vice president and COO of Neumonda.
Under the initiative a holding company called Neumonda GmbH (Oberursel, Germany) has been formed that will provide memory through three channels. Memphis Electronic will continue to distribute memory ICs and module and expand it specialty memory offering, while Intelligent Memory will continue as a fabless memory manufacturer that will offer DRAMs and expand into NAND flash storage products offered through a network of global distributors.
Neumonda Technology will own intellectual property in system-level test and failure analysis that can be used to validate memories and improve quality. This IP is expected to help memory manufacturers offer complex memories for such applications as Industrial Internet of Things (IIOT), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Edge Computing.
Intelligent Memory Ltd. is a Hong Kong company that Marco Mezger was a director of from April 2013 to December 2016, according to his LinkedIn page. During that time Mezger helped develop the company into a fabless DRAM company with its own memory module production.

“Specialty memory is a huge growth market that is propelled by digitization and automation in various industries,” said Hing Wong, managing director at Walden International, in the same statement. “We found that Memphis has an unmatched thirty-year market experience, and our coordinated investment will bring this experience and new application testing solutions with sustainable growth to global markets.”
The size of Walden’s investment was not disclosed nor we’re details given about Intelligent Memory and how it is involved in DRAM manufacturing and will become involved in NAND flash manufacturing.
