Intel is planning to add a plant in Italy and a research site in France alongside plans for a fab in Europe, says a report in Bloomberg

France will host a research and design centre while Italy will have a test and assembly plant, say sources at Intel quoted in the report. The company has research and design at its European headquartes outside Munich as well as IoT design in Swindon, UK.

Representatives of the French, German and Italian governments declined to comment to Bloomberg, as did Intel spokespeople in Europe and the US.

The suggestion of a test and assembly plant is key for Intel’s support for Europe’s plans for semiconductor sovereignty under the proposed Chips Act. This aims to stimulate a full supply chain in Europe, and the pandemic highlighted the importance of test and assembly, which is concentrated in Asia.

The report also suggests Intel’s plans are focussed on the chip cluster in Dresden, rather than other proposals for Bavaria in Germany to support German car makers and Galway in Ireland, close to Intel’s only other fab in Europe at Leixlip.
